Hey everyone, I was wondering if it is possible to learn to play the snare on your own. I play the pipes but my younger brother wants to learn to play the snare and I know some instruments its really not recommended such as the pipes but I wanted to know if the snare would be any different. Any insight you could give me would be greatly appreciated thank you

I play the pipes, but decided to learn the snare in an attempt to understand our drum corps. It's not the drums that make them different, it's genetics...
Anyway, a good tutor for beginners is Doug Stronach's "pipe band tutor." This will get him off to a good start with the rudiments. I'm sure he'll have some questions so it's always good to have an instructor. But for general street band stuff, he should be able to learn from this tutor.
You can buy a drum pad, or laminate some rubber to a piece of wood.
If he excels, than Blair Brown, "scores for the grade 4 drummer" would be my next suggestion.

Doug Stronach also has the Massed Band Drum Scores for Pipe Band Drummers with Hugh Cameron.
This is a good follow-up to the Pipe Band Tutor book, and was the route that I had gone. I am essentially self-taught through both of these books. I started in 2003, never having played an instrument before. I will say, it is a difficult road, and would be much better to get an instructor if possible.
