Ok, I doubt there’s a defendant answer so I just wanna hear some opinions.
I have been introducing the seconds to the tunes in my band. I'm leaning then and playing them, and trying to get other to learn them too. The question has arisen of that the ratio should be between 1st and 2nd playing. I think that one on one can work but to be on the safe side, 2:1 is good, but me pipe major is saying no less then 5:1. Another thing is, I am leaning the 3rd to a tune now, what is the ration then 3:2:1? 5:2:1?
Anyone have any this to say on the topic?

For seconds, I've always heard 5:1, increasing to 2 if there are 6 on firsts. Thirds usually just make things muddled - personally, I wouldn't bother with them except for a chord ending.

My pipe major who used to be p/m of the Scots Guards 1 & 2 and piper to the queen for some years syas "i usually try to get 4:1" for seconds. Personally i think 2:1 is way to many, i'm not sure about 3rds.... i would guess 6:1. Harmonics shouldnt be to strong unless your doing a trio or somthing like "hell bound train" where they're there for a strong melodic purpose. Other than that, harmonies should be like the strumming of a rhythm guitar behind a singer -you can hear it, but its not drawing your attention away from the singer.
If your doing this for competition tunes i would scrap the 3rds, b/c unless you can get them to sound even -not to drowned out, not to clashy- then they're really not worth it at all. If this is for parade/fun tunes, do w/e you want, haha

Thanks to everyone so far! And yea this is just for fun in pubs after parades, lol no competitions. I only found 3rds for one song so far, I haven’t tried it at all, I was just doing research : )

Yup, that'd be Gordon. He's not really my p/m but he's one of the founders of the NHSSA bands so he's always around helping out. He's in New Hampshire now and started up the New Hampshire School Of Scottish Arts (NHSSA) with his wife Lezlie.... if you didnt already know that.

I haven't seen him since 1992; I played with SG 2nd Btln at Redford Barracks in Edinburgh. Then I met up with them again at the Santa Rosa (California) Games. I knew he went on to be the Queen's piper, but lost track of him after that. Thanks for the update!
