Hello, I have wanted to play the bagpipes for many years. Now I'm going to do it (54 years old). I've seen several people post about staying away from bagpipes on Ebay. However, no one suggest where to buy from. Also, how much should I expect to pay. I really can't lay out my 401K for this purchase. I would like to buy as inexpensively as possible (don't we all). Can anyone offer any advice on where to buy and costs to expect? Thanks to all..............

401K ? I suspect that means that you're not British, so I can't suggest anywhere local. You could contact somewhere like Bagpipes Galore in Edinburgh (or a number of other places), but it's good to have somewhere where you can return to discuss any problems and get replacement reeds, hemp or any other spare parts.
Best thing is to buy a practise chanter and get some lessons. The person who teaches you will have some ideas about (relatively) local places to buy pipes and may be able to put you in touch with somebody selling pipes.
You can buy pipes from Ebay, but looked for a named make that you can look up on the internet - there are too many to list, but Naill, Shepperd, Hardie (not my favourite), Gillender & Mcleod, Kintail, Kron, War-mac, Warnock and many others have or had web pages and will have reviews on forums like this. What people mean is don't buy the £75 tourist sets available and bought by people despearate for a bargain.

Great. Thanks for the advice. At least I now know what to look out for. This is not something I know much about. Hopefully, all of that will change soon. Thanks again.......

My suggestion, and I started as an adult too, was DO NOT buy pipes until you have worked on the chanter for at least 6 months. Lots of people start but do not continue and it is a lot of money to lay out. It might take 6 months to get two tunes learned and then see if you are interested in trying pipes.

If it takes 6 months to learn 2 tunes you should quit because your wasting your time.

If it takes 6 months to learn 2 tunes you should quit because your wasting your time. I disagree. It is entirely realistic to take 6 months to start from scratch and learn how to read music, learn how to properly play the PC, and memorize two tunes played correctly. Sure, it can be done sooner - depending on skills and time available to practice. It could also take longer. Everyone is different and can progress at their own pace. There is no rush except your own desire.

I agree with Rick - it takes time. It's not like a lot of other instruments where you sit and glare at the dots and scrape your way through a tune and say that you've 'learned' it, nor simply strum through a basic accompaniment.
You have either learned a tune well enough to play by heart in front of others or you haven't. You don't just learn the scale you learn various embellishments, as well as how to read music and then how to play without it !
Some people do make faster progress, but only some. It depends on a lot of things.

I know this thread is quite old. Buying Pipes one should Consider "AFRICAN BLACKWOOD" lesser crappier rose wood crocus wood "Pakistani made" tend to be garbage...... one would expect 1000-1300.00 usd.
Practice Chanters some will sell a childs size for lesser amount but then YOU have more work adapting to the pipe chanter fingering... (rob Pete to pay Paul)
Most adults tend to be slower NOT mentally but getting he fingers to work, sometimes we read Bing bong boop and play it choppy bink bonk boomp while a younger person might grasp the 3 notes In 12 time signatures and slow up and back down the scale and even make a tune using them,.. lol it takes time and effort and finess..haha
spending 70- dollars on a chanter and if you cant learn to read the music enough to hack a couple tunes is realistic... getting frustrated and putting it down is no big deal, I Started at age 30 I'd come up with a family of musicians and I was the flunky never figured out a bunch of things While my brother played Guitar and keyboards in bands from 16 until 39 haha... with a roomate learning and a fledgling band to join (both 6 months ahead of me, I was driven to catch them... so the idea of "competition" is a good idea, if you can find it.... Obviously a grade 2 band is going to be so far ahead you'll never get there get frustrated and walk away..its important to find even a like minded person that you might be able to share the trials and tribulations with... Obviously this depends much on Location and availability too.... if you havent tryed yet there is still time
