Hey im just starting on the actual bag. I have been playing the chanter for a while and when i play the on the bag my lower hand starts to cramp and hurt a bit.
I think this is because I'm so used to having to support the practice chanter.
Are there any techniques or anything that i could use to learn to not grip my bag chanter so hard? its usually with the D finger and thumb. Idk is this common or am i weird? I'm just wondering

It is not uncommon to have cramping when learning to play.
One thing to do is rest the PC on a table, or your leg, or something - so you don't develop the habit of holding tightly.
When playing the bag, the chanter needs to be positioned so that it is in a comfortable position that does not require any support (or just slightly). You should not have to reach out too far.
You will probably have to focus on relaxing the lower hand until it becomes natural. Just one more thing to think about while wresting the octopus... ;D
Your instructor or a fellow piper should be able to help out to check your posture and positioning while playing - to make improvements.
Good Luck rick

It's tricky when you start and likely because your wrist is at and odd angle and your gripping the chanter much harder than you need too. I have been at it 14 months and I'm at the point now where I play with a really light grip. Anyway do as Rick said and hang in there.

Oh and for me it makes a big difference as to the direction of the holes I have my chanter pointing slightly to the right and it works for me.
