Well in the past few months i've been learning the uilleann pipe. and today i was goofing around with the reed, and i set a walsh practice (GHB) chanter reed in the UP chanter and well.... i could get into the second octave nicly and still be in tune (more or less) couldnt get past high B.
the UP scale its defgabcDEFGABCD a low octave and high octave.
i was amused, if i could tweek the reed to play better than i could save allot of money on reeds

Save money on reeds ? SURELY you'll be making your own reeds now.
i reckon you must be right, though. The idea that you can't buy a reed that will work in most uillean pipe chanters always sounded strange to me. A little fettling maybe, but £25 for a reed that doesn't work ? Do any other reed instruments need completely bespoke reeds ?

thankfully UP reeds last a LONG time, probably b/c they're dry reeds. So i just got my one good chanter reed and hopfully wont be needing another for a while.

I am thinking when I grow up and am financially stable, I can get a set of Uilleann pipes. They sound just perfect, maybe its just because Im Irish though...ha.

They got practice sets (bag, bellow, chanter) which is all you really need for a long time for anywhere betwixt $400-$1500. Theres a maker here in Boston that makes chanters out of Derlin, they're $400 and sound very good. But same thing, watch out for Pakis.
If you really want to play UP's learn the Tin Whistle like crazy, Its basicaly the same. Most of thebest pipers i know have already been playing the tin whistle for years befor the start the UP.
