I have heard that there are major and minor notes on the pipes (or a key I could be wrong) dose anyone know what they are.

There are some progressions that sound a bit like sequences in certain keys. I'm not an expert on this, but there is a passage on p37 of Roderick C Cannon's 'The Highland Bagpipe and its Music'.
He describes a pentatonic 'A' scale as a, b, c, e, f, A which sounds like A major. A similar scale starting on b, but emphasising the f would sound like B minor. If it starts on g (ie g, a, b, d, e, g, a) then it will sound like G major, and .... The pentatonic 'D' scale a, b, d, e, f, A sounds like D major.
He does go into rather more detail, but that's the gist of it.
I suspect that this might not help you much, though. Obviously these keys are based on the pitch of your chanter - just because it 'sounds like A major' doesn't mean you'll be in tune with an orchestra !
